Description of the picture:

Fortuneteller – Mikhail Vrubel. 1895. Oil on canvas. 135×86.5
The work was created in a few hours. The master worked on a portrait of a wealthy customer, but at some point he refused to write a moneybags and quickly wrote the Fortuneteller on top of the work already begun.

Three years before writing the work, the artist became interested in the image of Carmen from Bizet’s opera. For a long time he talked about his ideas to colleagues, but did not start work. The model for the picture agreed to become a woman with whom the master was hardly familiar.

In this work, the usually serene and frivolous color looks alarming and even sinister. The work was done in the manner of the impressionists, the main thing in it is the impression of the master about the plot, his anxiety, feelings and forebodings.
Now it becomes clear and burning eyes of the heroine. She learned someone else’s secret, she looked into the future and she feels uncomfortable.

Work solved in the colors of the red spectrum. A pink scarf of the heroine is knocked out of the general gamut. In front of the viewer, undoubtedly, a Spanish woman against the background of Moorish carpets. The heroine has a fortunate disposition, cards portend trouble. It is no accident that the author depicted the ace of spades in the layout.
